HAIL 2 DA BEATZ
An odyssey of animation and music.
Bernie is a young latino kid born with antlers living in a posh cabin with his roommate, Spanky, a 7 foot tall blue yeti.
In the short, Bernie wants to play outside, but due to a hail storm, has to stay inside. In an attempt to cheer up his flatmate, Spanky composes music from the hail, they soon play through the whole storm as they finally watch the sun peek through at the end!
The animated short has a runtime of two minutes and 14 seconds, utilizing traditional animation (Pencil and paper). Animation is "inked and colored" via ToonBoom software
and composited together with digitally illustrated backgrounds in Adobe After Effects.
The characters in the film set the tone with the debut of their dynamic with each other and their connection to the original music in the film as the musicians themselves acting as a window to the branded identity of “Hanbasm” and promote it’s attached album entitled, “Odyssey”

“Hail 2 Da Beatz” is a music video that features characters from the “Hanbasm” brand, Bernie and Spanky.

The animation process for this music video is easier said than done, starting from principle keys with rough timing weaving into a fully animated sequence and ending with full digital scans that are digitally colored and retimed into the full sequence.
The music behind the animation
ODYSSEY is part of the “Hanbasm” brand, an animated band utilizing the key characters BERNIE and SPANKY as it’s core members.
The instruments utilized to define each character are: bass guitar and keyboard.
With BERNIE as keyboardist, introducing childish chords and unsure guitar riffs.
As for SPANKY, his funky/punk-style bass creates a mammoth sound that represents his presence within the duo.
Together the instrumentation harkens back to such bands like; DEVO, Tom Tom club, Space, and Gary Numan. Reverberated drum tracks, steady bass grooves, and atmospheric guitar riffing all help define that sound and aesthetic. However, it is important to retain the ideology that these characters are producing this music. Allowing room for error, characterization with the method of playing, and even the choice in production all help reinforce the parallel universe in which these characters live with ours. Drawing most influences from different genres that reflect their personalities, disco, post-punk, funk, dub, and “plunder-phonics”.
